Math Assessments for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

I don't know about you, but I've been somewhat frustrated by the lack of assessments that cooperatively work with the Common Core State Standards. Even our math curriculum (Everyday Mathematics), which is aligned to the CCSS, isn't throwing out easy answers to assessing for the Common Core.

I decided that just wouldn't do. I came up with an assessment myself. What I wanted was an easy assessment that I could give easily and quickly that was specifically aimed at specific standards within the domains for math. I also wanted something that could be used as a point of reference when looking into interventions for a student.

It seems so funny to me that we have gotten so darn fantastic at diagnosing reading abilities, areas of strength and areas of weakness, but we just haven't gotten there with math yet. If someone were to ask if about a student and which specific areas of math they seem to struggle with, we should be able to easily give them as detailed a response as we can with reading. My hope is that this assessment pack will help us with that.

The First Grade Common Core State Standard Common Mathematics Assessment was designed to help you find and diagnose weak areas in mathematics for your first graders. One of the greatest challenges I had as a first grade teacher was pinpointing which mathematical skills my students had strengths and weaknesses in. When the CCSS were rolled out last year, I knew I needed to create an assessment piece that would complement not only what I was teaching in my classroom but also the expectations of the Common Core. I needed assessments that were easy to give and analyze.

This assessment pack has a simple, one page assessment to go with each standard for all four first grade math domains within the Common Core State Standards. It can be administered, checked and recorded quickly. It was created to be flexible; it can be used as a stand-alone assessment or in conjunction with other assessment practices you use in your classroom.

The First Grade Common Core State Standard Mathematical Assessment Pack has a section devoted to sech of the four math domains. Each includes:
·         an explanation of the pack
·         an assessment for each of the standards within the domain
·         an answer key
·         the Common Core State Standards (in detail) for that domain,
·         class check list for the standards in that domain
·         individual student tracking sheets with space designated for notes and intervention details.

These can be used together as an overall picture of your class security with the standards, as an overall picture of a particular standard in respect to your students, or tracking of an individual student’s profiency with the standards. The First Grade CCCSS Mathematic Assessment Pack can be a point of reference for choosing or designing interventions.

The following standards are present in this Assessment Pack: 1.OA.1, 1.OA.2, 1.OA.3, 1.OA.4, 1.OA.5, 1.OA.6, 1.OA.7, 1.OA.8, 1.NBT.1, 1.NBT.2, 1.NBT.3, 1.NBT.4, 1.NBT.5, 1.NBT.6, 1.MD.A.1, 1.MD.A.2, 1.MD.B.3, 1.GA.1, 1.GA.2, 1.GA.3.

  1. I think this is a wonderful idea. I always with I had a more clear picture of the exact skills my kiddies were weak in and had a more systemic way of assessing them . Wish you had that for second grade as well.

BTW you've been boo-ed. Come check out my post and participate if you can.
